Can Fish Oil Supplements Give You More Omega 3 Than Omega 3 Foods?

by Malc on December 10, 2010

Fish oil supplements are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids. Eating foods rich in omega 3 is another way that we can supply our body with all the fatty acids that we need. Some people would argue that we don’t need supplements. A healthy diet should be more than enough to provide us with all the essential nutrients that we need.

In the past, that statement would be more true. People didn’t need fish oil pills or supplements back then. Most of our foods don’t go through as much processing and are our grandparents’ and great grandparents’ diets are healthier. They prepared and cooked most of their foods and they used to get most of their ingredients fresh from the farm. But today, we thrive on the convenience of fast food. We hardly know where our foods comes from or how it’s prepared. And when we do cook our food, we use processed ingredients to make cooking easier and faster.

And this doesn’t include the fact that most of foods themselves today are not as healthy as they were in the last century. For example:

  • Fatty fish. This used to be a good source of omega 3 fish oil . But now we have to be a bit more cautious as some fish are contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides and inorganic compounds.
  • Beef. Beef used to be a good source of omega 3 back in the days when cows were allowed to graze and they were grass fed. Now cows are kept in pens and they are corn fed, so their meat contains fat with too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Eggs. In the past, eggs were naturally rich in omega 3 and other essential fatty acids. That’s because chickens used to be able to graze and eat insects and grass. This made the eggs more nutritious. But now chickens are kept in small coops and grain-fed. So when you eat eggs – ‘free range’ is important.
  • Flaxseed. Flaxseed isn’t a very good source of omega 3 fatty acids as most people believe. Our body needs DHA and EPA omega 3 fatty acids. Flaxseed contains ALA, which the body has to convert to DHA and EPA. The problem with ALA though is only 2% of t is converted to DHA and ALA.

As you can see, we really need to take fish oil supplements everyday if we want to get all the health benefits of omega 3. Omega 3 is vital for anti-aging it has so many benefits. But get it in the right way.
