Keeping Yourself Healthy – with Blood Tests

Why should you spend your time – and money – getting blood tests done?

Firstly, it’s so you can stay in control of them. You don’t want to rely on the limited tests which your doctor is likely to do.

Secondly, blood tests can give you a warning of problems which are brewing, which you can take action to counteract.

You can’t avoid all serious health problems – but you can avoid a lot of them by getting an early warning.

For example, raised low-grade inflammation in the body can only be detected with a blood test, but it is very easy to detect. It’s also usually pretty easy to treat.

What does it cause? Well, it’s correlated with cancer, heart disease and dementia.

If you identify this early with a simple, low-cost blood test and successfully treat it with simple nutritional supplements you will have helped to safeguard your future health significantly.

And it will pay to recheck it every 1-2 years.

Getting Blood Tests Done

Depending on where you live, it can be very easy to get a set of blood tests done. What is the process?

There are many labs throughout America, where you can get these tests done pretty cheaply.

I buy my tests through Life Extension Foundation, or “LEF”, so I’ll use them for illustration.

The starting point for your blood tests will probably be what they call in their shop the “Male Panel”, or the “Female Panel”.

A “Panel” is simply a set of blood tests which will apply to just about everyone. There are then additional tests which you can bolt on if you, or your health advisor, want you to.

The male and female panels are very similar: the differences are a small number of tests for sex-related glands, eg the prostate.

Interpreting The Results

To interpret the blood tests it will be best for you to get advice from a qualified medical practitioner – one who understands preventive medicine.

As time passes, you will find you start to understand how to interpret some of the results yourself. You will also learn where some of your health weaknesses are and some of your strengths. This is all to the good and will give you more control of your health.

It’s also worth searching for health forums where people are talking about blood tests.

I recommend you look for forums where people are into the idea of longevity – living with maximum health for the longest period of time. Included in this community are people who are at the cutting edge of scientific knowledge about health, supplements and blood tests.

How to Apply All This

The first thing to do is to book in for your blood tests. I recommend buying them through Life Extension Foundation. You can get the blood taken in any one of hundreds of labs throughout the USA.

If you are not in America, then your tests are liable to be more expensive. I tend to be in America every year or two so I have tests when I go over there. (Could it be a good excuse for a holiday?)

The second thing is to get those two books I mentioned – Transcend and Life Extension Revolution. These are a great start for your education and are very accessible.

The third thing is to find somebody to help you interpret your blood test results.

I have personally consulted with Dr Terry Grossman in Denver, and Phillip Lee Miller is based in California. So, those are two possibilities. Apart from that, I suggest you research antiaging physicians. You need someone who is medically qualified – so can understand research (and preferably keeps up to date with anti-ageing research), but who also leans in a natural medicine direction.

If you keep repeating these steps you will find that in a few years, you will have increased your knowledge about how your body works and how to interpret blood tests enormously.

Further Reading

There are four factors of major importance of your health, which I have written about elsewhere on the blog. They are methylation, glycation, oxidation and inflammation.

These are easy to understand and I highly recommend you bear them in mind when you are looking at your own blood tests.

And, finally, I do strongly recommend that you have blood tests on a regular basis – every 1 to 2 years. Even if you don’t find a physician to help you interpret them for a while, having a history of your blood tests can be invaluable when you finally do find one to help you.
