Stem cells are being tested to improve the success rate of certain heart attack treatments.

If a blocked artery causes a heart attack, a common treatment is to insert a stent – a hollow tube – into the artery to re-enable the blood flow. The problem is that the insertion of the stent can cause tissue damage. By introducing large numbers of stem cells to the area at the same time it is expected that the healing process will be faster and better.

The difference with this trial is that when the stem cells are needed there is no time to grow the patient’s own stem cells – to avoid rejection by the immune system. Australian company Mesoblast has overcome that problem by growing a specific kind of stem cell found in bone marrow which does not trigger an immune response. In other words, they can be introduced into anyone’s body without fear of rejection.

These stem cells are also not embryonic stem cells which have caused controversy in the past. They are capable of being grown en masse and kept in storage for when they are needed.

The study will involve 225 patients who have suffered severe heart attacks in the UK, Netherlands and Belgium. Initial results are expected after 12 months. There appears to be a very good chance that this use of the specialised stem cells will significantly improve the recovery from the operation as well as the survival rate.

You may remember this is the exercise method Terry Grossman put me onto when I visited him in his anti-aging clinic in Denver in the summer.

What a great method of exercise interval training is! I particularly like it because 1. you don’t have to go out, and 2. it’s quick – get it done, and that’s it. It’s also very active. That suits me too.

My favourite (and hardest) routine involves 7 types of abdominal crunches and is carried out using only a sofa! Rock hard abs guaranteed in 3 months – if you keep it up. You don’t have to want to be a hunk to do it – reduced abdominal fat is also correlated with lower levels of cancer and heart disease.

The video showing you how to get rock-hard abs is the second one on this page.

Interval training is the healthiest way to exercise. It is better than cardio; better than weight training.

What is interval training?

Basically, you do one minute of intense exercise following by 1-2 minutes of recovery time; then repeat. You can work up to 15-20 minutes a day, and that is a huge chunk of your exercise need met. You will also easily get rock hard abs!

Many of the weight loss regimes being sold on the Internet are based on this method. That’s because it really works!

You can do many exercises in an interval training sort of way – it’s just the ’1 minute intense, 1-2 minutes recovery’ routine which is at the heart of the system.

You can use pressups, running, fast walking, abdominal crunches, the plank, ‘rock climbing’, etc with interval training.

My developing site at www.HealthyNumber1.com has details of what interval training is, and also there are two short workouts which can be used to shape up, lose any flab and get healthy.

Interval training is one of the best ways to lose weight, as well as to strengthen heart and lungs. I recommend it strongly.

Obviously, it should be part of a healthy lifestyle – including a healthy diet.
